Here in the US we are just about thirteen months away from having to choose between “damned if you do” and “damned if you don’t.” In other words, the next Presidential election is November 8, 2016, a fact I can’t escape no matter how much I try. It’s been thrown in my face since sometime after January 1 by half my Facebook friends and by just about everyone on Twitter. When it hits Instagram, I’m checking out.
There was a time I really cared who took up temporary residence at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, DC 20500. Then I realized they’re all pretty much the same. Same with Congress: Red Team or Blue Team, it makes no difference. It’s like a smorgasbord where you hate everything on it, but you’ve already paid your ten dollars and they won’t refund your money, so you feel obligated to take something and choke it down as best you can. Whenever I’m feeling that way, PJ O’Rourke never fails to cheer me up. The book this is from was published in 2012, the last time we had one of these exercises in
frustration democracy. Heaven help us all.
