#TwoForTuesday: Stock Aitken Waterman

Mike Stock, Matt Aitken, and Pete Waterman, collectively known as Stock Aitken Waterman or just SAW, were a British songwriting and production team that was active from 1984 through 1993. They wrote and/or produced hits for a number of artists, among them Bananarama, Kylie Minogue, Mel and Kim, and Rick Astley. Their sound defined the 1980’s for many people, including myself. They still work together in various combinations. You can find a full list of their hits by year on Wikipedia.

Rick Astley’s mega-hit “Never Gonna Give You Up” was written and produced by SAW, as were many of his other hits, including “Together Forever,” our first selection today. It rose to #2 i the UK, #1 in the US, and #19 in Australia in spring of 1988.

SAW also wrote and produced “Especially For You” for Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan, two former contestants (neither of whom did that well) in my Battles of the Bands. The song was a million-seller in the UK, where it went to #1 in early 1989, and it reached #2 in Australia, but didn’t chart in the US.

    1. Looks like they owned the charts, at least in the UK. A lot of their songs were popular when I was in my late 20’s and 30’s, when I spent a lot of time listening to pop radio and watching MTV as I traveled. Great stuff.

  1. What memories that brings back I was in my thirties with children but not above dancing along and singing to SAW . Fabulous music I remember watching Neighbours with Jason and Kylie …. I don’t watch it anymore. Great post!
