One of the more common uses for portmanteaus is to name geographic locations. We’ve already seen Eurasia, the land mass that contains Europe and Asia. When Tanganyika and Zanzibar combined in 1964, they became the Republic of Tanzania. When the Czech Republic and Slovakia were forced together under the Nazis during World War II, the country was called Czechoslovakia, and it remained a single country under the Warsaw Pact, finally splitting back into the two countries in the 1990’s. Illiana, Illinois is a town on the border between Illinois and Indiana; likewise Michiana is an area comprised of counties from Michigan and Indiana. There’s a full list of border towns and areas in the United States here.

Anyway, the town of Virgilina, Virginia is a town of 159 people in Halifax County, Virginia that sits on the border between Virginia and North Carolina.

What portmanteau gographic names can you think of?

  1. Very cool! Texarkana, Texas+Arkansas+Louisana= Texarkana it includes the three states it is located around all the states. It is also in Arkansas too. So, Texarkana, Tx and Texarkana, Ar combine to be population 37,200 ish people in 2013. I just thought your find here was cool and that is what came to my mind. Great post!

    1. That’s the classic example. Years ago, CBS Radio invented the town of Philachilastlony, which was a portmanteau of its flagship news stations (Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles, St. Louis, New York). Geographical areas use portmanteaus a lot.

    1. This wasn’t supposed to go out until next month, but OK…

There are a lot of those combinations of celebrity names, and also character names (e.g. Tiva, for Tony and Ziva, two characters on “NCIS”). I don’t think I chose any of those.

      1. Ah the joys of scheduling posts! I’m impressed you have V done. I have several posts drafted and working on a theme so plans in place but I only have one that’s actually on blogger as a draft. Now I’m thinking twice about actually scheduling it lol

        1. Of course, V might be the only one… 😆 Now I think I’ll come up with a new one for V. Normally what I do is take care of all the scheduling stuff and tags before I write the post, so I don’t forget. Guess what? I forgot…
