#1LinerWeds from Marshall McLuhan

For the “message” of any medium or technology is the change of scale or pace or pattern that it introduces into human affairs. – Marshall McLuhan

I found this quote in my Kindle highlights. It’s from Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man, the famous work by media philosopher Marshall McLuhan, written in the early Sixties. At the time, he was talking about radio and television, but it’s just as applicable to the Internet, particularly the last ten years. I really should get back to reading his book again…

    1. The book isn’t exactly what I’d call “light reading.” There are a lot of complicated observations in it. It’s a good book and seminal in the whole media discussion, but as with most scholarly writing, a bear to read.
