Nature’s Garbage #JusJoJan

For the last day of Just Jot It January, Lorraine from Lorraines’s frilly freudian slip gives us the word “detritus.”

This is a fantastic exercise, and I’d like to thank Linda for once again hosting it and for giving us all the opportunity to submit words to be used as prompts for the month. A few of them have given me trouble, and “detritus” is one of them. So, I went to the dictionary online and learned that detritus is “a loose mass of stones, silt, etc. that has been worn away from rocks,” such as by a glacier or by water washing against it. It also gives the definition “any disintegrated material; debris.”

It sorta-kinda sounds like rubbish, doesn’t it? And it is, sorta-kinda, the difference being rubbish is created by man and detritus by nature.

The conclusion? Yes, it is…

  1. Turkey vultures clean up organic detritus across the U.S. West (not the Baby Bell phone company, though it’s probably trashed too). TVs are nature’s red-headed garbage men. They don’t like candy wrappers or beer cans, so the West remains trashed thanks to careless humans.

  2. Road kill — another way man makes nature rubbish/garbage/refuse/detritus and then nature makes it a meal. I always liked the sound of detritus and I think of it as what we shed willingly or no.

  3. Ahh rubbish, we hear this coming from so many political people recently don’t we:) I see rubbish from people who don’t care and throw things out into a ditch to that huge pile floating in the ocean. I have to say I never heard of that word before…detritus

  4. Good explanation. Following on from your comment on my post yep you call it oatmeal we call it porridge. Tastes best when sweetened and hot! As for collar stays we call them collar bones and yes they should come stitched in! (On cheap shirts they usually are.)

    1. Collar stays/bones are one of those “I don’t get it” items, kind of like the pins that push the tie forward.

      Mary makes oatmeal in the slow cooker, with apples and a little cinnamon. Works best with steel-cut oats rather than rolled ones; the rolled ones turn into mush in a hurry. We don’t add any sugar, although we do add dried fruit and there’s usually a lot of sugar in that.
